Description of the Project
The goal of our project is to design a versatile desk that can be reconfigured to address different workspace requirements in a smooth and safe manner. Adjustable height, extendable work area, tilting features, detachable chairs, security measures, and ability to be easily transported are the most important performance requirements that need to be addressed. To meet these requirements, a thorough project proposal addressing the need, analysis and frame design brief must be created, a budget, schedule and project plan must be set, alternative solutions must be accounted for, and testing and validation must be completed. Once these project deliverables are met, the team hopes to meet the desired outcome of successfully designing and machining a versatile desk that can improve the student lounges at TCNJ and has met the desired specifications while staying within budget.
Primary Challenges
Some of the expected design challenges for the project include designing a linkage system that will properly lock, align the extensions with the main tabletop, as well as properly support the extended area. It also will be a challenge to ensure that the different sub-systems do not interfere with one another. Ergonomic challenges include appealing to different height ranges, and ensuring the system is aesthetically pleasing when collapsed and expanded. The team would also like to ensure that the design is user friendly and it is intuitive to use the different features. Finally, guaranteeing the system is strong and stable may be difficult.
